Dhokra is a unique mat weaving tradition of North Bengal. It is a handloom tradition of weaving Jute the ‘Golden Fibre" and cotton yarns cultivated locally into runner by Kushmandi and Harirampur blocks of Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal. Weaving is done on home-based strap looms. Women of the indigenous community, namely the Rajbanshis and the Polis are engaged in weaving. Traditionally, women dyed the Jute yarns with fruits from the local trees. These days they use Azo-free dyes to add a variety of colours to the weave. Rugs are known for their fairly bold colors and geometrical patterns and are used for floor covering
